Good morning, Mr. Shaw, Mr. Eldridge, Mr. McDaniel, Mr. Fitzhgh. Yesterday we were told that the House Finance Budget Subcommittee had a chance to pass the Long Term Care Community Choices ACT and instead voted to delay action. If this is true, we wonder why? This legislation is needed by many people with disabilities and Seniors in our district. Thank you for serving. CLICK HERE FOR LONG TERM CARE UPDATE

The Jackson Center for Independent Living, Tennessee Voices for Children & The Arc of Tennessee’s Project LINK collaboratively present A Special Education Advocacy Academy for Students with disabilities, Parents and Teachers working together Thursday, May 15, 5:30 P.M. – 8:30 P.M.
Join us at JCIL at 1981 Hollywood in Jackson for an interesting workshop of exploring the basics of Special Education Advocacy. The short version needed as background knowledge is that the federal Special Education law (IDEIA a.k.a. Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act) requires IEPs (Individualized Education Plan) for students with disabilities. We will explore the rights and responsibilities of parents and students with disabilities and how to advocate for services as an effective team member.

Pre-registration is not required, but it would be appreciated. If you have questions about this Advocacy Workshop Academy, contact Phillip Merrell, Jackson Center for Independent Living at spanish@jcil.tn.org or (731) 668-2211 VOICE/TTY.

MEMO
05/07/08 --- We received disturbing news yesterday. An agency that had promised us a grant to assist a family with disabilities in getting their own home now says the grant may not be available. If this project falls through it will be devastating to the family and a huge disappointment to the dozens of individuals and agencies who partnered with JCIL and worked so hard to make this dream come true. We ask you to join us as we pray that this state agency honors their commitment to this deserving family.

05/09/08 --- We got the bad news yesterday. The state grant isn't coming. It's up to JCIL and our partners to solve this problem. Meeting today 10 AM. Be there. Prayers appreciated.

05/10/08 --- The JCIL Homeownership department reports the possibility of acquiring one or two smaller grants and the "loving" cooperation of the banker. There is still hope and, as you know, JCIL Makes Hope Accessible.
